I believe that you would agree with me that humans are in their very nature a trichotomy, that is, they are made up of three parts: Self help formula that can make money, create great relationships, help with weight loss or heal bod. Body, Soul the mind, emotions, and will, and Spirit that part of us that transcends this body. To achieve whole life fulfillment, "Success," each of these areas must receive special attention in order to bring balance to our lives and achieve true success. In the past, success has come to be measured by a basic core of measurable objectives, all of which, in and of themselves are fine, but in and of themselves are totally inadequate to fulfill a person. Some of these are: Money. The accumulation of money has always been a pursuit of man.

1 Banya. This is a Russian tradition which includes a trip with a group of Russians to a dacha cabin somewhere outside of town. In the back yard is a homemade sauna, well like a sauna, but with a heat source capable of producing 1000 times more heat than Americans are used to. Once at the dacha, your host will produce three things a large bottle of homemade vodka, an assortment of smoked or raw fish with heads still on and a collection of cedar branches. You will then be instructed to disrobe, wrap yourself in a sheet, sit in the sauna while being beaten with the cedar branches until you feel like you are going to pass out, walk outside the banya, roll in the snow, take a shot of vodka, eat a piece of fish and repeat. This is a famous Russian tradition and more than likely one that you will be asked to do during your stay. Just be prepared. 2 Transportation. While I was in Russia hitchhiking was quite common. Most people would walk out in the street, extend one finger which meant that you were looking for a ride and someone would stop. You would negotiate a price and this is where learning to speak some Russian comes in handy and if it was fair, they would take you where you were going.

Since the newsletter is published quarterly and distributed primarily by postal mail, a copy of the article was promptly circulated to a select list of Shroud researchers via e mail. One of them, Dr. Alan Whanger, a Shroud researcher who has done considerable work on the coin theory, decided to write an e mail response to the article and distribute it to the same select list of researchers. As I watched the debate between these two gentlemen unfold, I decided to get their permission to publish it here on the website. It provides an excellent example of two prominent researchers with opposing viewpoints debating a controversial issue with mutual respect and professionalism. It also demonstrates why making up one's mind about the Shroud of Turin is difficult when more than one credible point of view exists. However, it is this spirit of cooperation and willingness to communicate that will truly further Shroud research. For those viewers not familiar with the workings of the academic or scientific community, the debate should provide some insight into how science operates. I am pleased to present it here and thank Professor Lombatti and Dr. Whanger for giving me permission to share it with you. Thanks also to Ian Wilson and the BSTS for allowing me to reprint the article.
