There were over a thousand folk clubs, mostly inbackrooms of pubs all over the country. Folk dancing was enormously popular andthere were Morris dance sides leaping up and down all over the place. We came upwith the idea of a programme which brought all these things together, it wascalled Folk on Friday and thanks toJims immense knowledge of the folk scene it was a smash hit. Weve stillgot a copy of a long feature about the programme which was in She magazine. Theres a wonderful photoof Frances with those great big glasses and long hair half covering her face. Shes staring soulfully into the camera and the caption says: THE EARTH MOTHEROF FOLK. We did alot of touring round the country for the programme, and one occasion I rememberin particular was when we were going up to Bury in Lancashire to record at thefolk club there. Bury is very close to a large, desolate area called PendleHill, reputed to be a centre of witchcraft. As we werea bit early for the club we stopped on Pendle Hill for a breather and my PA,Judy, who was with us in the car, decided to go off for a walk. And she didntcome back. It was a very misty afternoon and beginning to get dark.
